The Basics

September 19th, 2009

The intent of this blog is to bring you exceptional art by exceptional artist. Since I myself am a representational artist most of the art I write about is representational. It is my opinion that this is the highest form of two-dimensional art and that it is art that can be weighed and judge because it is based on a set of basic skills that can be observed and judged in an artists work. These skills are a set of self-developed observational abilities as well as life long learned skill of translating observations to paint on canvas. When done correctly these strokes and dabs of paint communicate to the viewer the artist impression of the subject.

Though the manner in which an artist applies paint to canvas will vary greatly between artists, the basic building block skills are the same. I call these basic but they are by no means easy and few artists manage to master all of them in every painting. So for those who are not artist, but love art, I have written the following articles to explain to the best of my ability what these basic building blocks are and make notes on how artists apply them to communicate a three dimensional world on a two dimensional canvas.
